Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN)

program image
https://grandmothersadvocacy.org/   GRAN is a dynamic network of volunteers from across Canada working together to influence policy change and stimulate effective action in Canada and internationally to promote and protect the human rights of grandmothers, children and youth of sub-Saharan Africa. GRAN’s work is grounded on a firm commitment to social justice, equality and human rights. Older women and the children they support are at the centre of their advocacy. GRAN takes action in four key areas:
  • The Right to Health
  • The Right to Education and Life-long Learning
  • The Right to Freedom from Violence
  • The Right to Economic Security and Social Protection
They advocate at the local, national and international level for policies and programs that will address the needs of African grandmothers as they strive to sustain their families and communities in the wake of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. They educate to raise public awareness and invite engagement and mobilization. This is done through direct messaging, media, social media, campaigns, petitions, events, presentations and more. They partner with like-minded organizations to amplify their voices and increase their impact.

How GRAN Works:

They take every opportunity to participate when, where and however they can to influence Canadian and international decision-makers as they make choices, allocate resources and develop policies and programs that impact the world’s most vulnerable. They work in partnership with many Civil Society Organizations in Canada and internationally with whom they share similar issues and goals. They engage with MPs, Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentary committees, and Parliamentary Secretaries, as well as with organizations that play a role in international development. They speak up in their communities by submitting Letters to the Editor, circulating petitions and advocacy campaign post cards and holding public events to draw attention to human rights that are being violated or ignored.
