Organization Description: The Redefining Retirement program is facilitated by a partnership of two Nova Scotia organizations:
  • The Acadia Entrepreneurship Centre, is a university-based non-profit organization specializing in the development of rural Nova Scotia economies.
  • Third Sector Enhancement is an intergenerational family business providing support to non-profit organizations and local governments.
  • The program was developed and piloted in Nova Scotia through the generous support of the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors.
Program Description:  The Redefining Retirement program is shining a light on the contributions of older adults and the important role they play in invigorating our communities and rural economy. We believe that with the proper supports and resources, older adults can make purposeful decisions about where and how they spend their time and resources. The Redefining Retirement program will increase the number of older adults who are participating meaningfully in their communities and the economy. In so doing, they will improve the regional economy, stimulate social and intergenerational connections, and reduce the stigma historically attached to aging. Through a series of workshops and exercises, participants take stock of their experiences, skills, interests and passions, and find ways to match their interests with the needs of their community – all with an aim to achieve fulfillment in later years. Through the program’s five modules, participants and facilitators work together to develop an action plan that enables older adults to identify, and achieve, their goals. There are some laughs along the way, and the development of new friendships and networks. Redefining Retirement is available to anyone who identifies as an older adult and is seeking to identify their purpose in the coming stages of life. Program Impact: Past participants of the program have gone on to volunteer in their community, support their families, start businesses, go back to full or part-time work, or have simply found renewed purpose that makes them excited to wake up each day. Testimonials of past participants include:
  • “This is a critical course for all pre- and post-retirees: it focuses on "you" - your needs, wants, skills, etc. - and walks you through a seamless process of discovery. While you may not come out of it with a defined vision of your retirement, you will certainly start your retirement planning to capitalize on your future and well-being.”
  • “I would encourage people to enroll in the Redefining Retirement program. It was great meeting other retired people, hearing their ideas and having discussions. It was a good chance for me to reflect on what I want to do in my retirement.”
  • “Challenging, engaging and positive experience. I learned more about who I am and more importantly, who I am and what I value as a retired Nova Scotian. Great opportunity to meet and share with your peers and facilitators.”
  • “I think this is an excellent program for older adults at any level of ‘readiness’ for retirement.”
Adaptations to Covid-19: The Redefining Retirement has traditionally been held in-person but has moved online (using Zoom) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additional Links and contact information Website: https://redefiningretirement.ca/ Email: connect@redefiningretirement.ca Phone: (902) 877-7683
