The Bridge: Adult Day Program Calgary

program image

The Bridge has been operating since early May to provide intentional

programming for older adults who may be faced with complex health conditions and cognitive

decline. The Compass Rose Care team has recognized a gap in services for those living at

home while experiencing physical and cognitive challenges and has created an affordable

private pay program to slow decline while giving care givers a well-deserved break. The Bridge

provides programming at the Canyon Meadows and Silver Springs Community Associations

from 9:00 to 3:00 on Monday’s and Tuesdays respectively.

It is estimated that 14% of Alberta’s population consists of adults aged 65 and above, with one

in nine expected to receive a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia. As this population

grows, it is imperative that available resources are brought into the public eye. Research states

that the majority of older adults would prefer to age in their own homes, and adult day

programming is shown to aid in this process. Social interaction, physical activity and cognitive

stimulation are known to slow cognitive decline, maintain day-to-day functionality and improve

sleep. Although there are currently programs run through Alberta Health Services, wait times

are unpredictable, participants are limited to 12 hours of programming weekly, and the process

of referrals and eligibility requirements leave many without options.

The Bridge is hoping to fill the gap by providing another option for those who do not want to

wait, or who may be ineligible for publicly funded programs. With a team consisting of registered

nurses, health care aides and an athletic therapist, their goal is to provide a healthy and safe

environment to help older adults be the best version of themselves for longer. Participants can

expect a day of socialization, physical activity, creative pursuits and cognitive stimulation geared

towards group interests. In publishing this information, we hope to have more people attend our

program, educate the public on available resources and challenge Albert Health to provide

patients with alternative options.

As a private program, we are currently operating without any form of government funding. It is

important for us to increase enrolment so that we can continue to provide this service for the

foreseeable future.

“Over the past weeks we have been able to see our participants develop relationships with

each other as well as staff members, try new activities and become aware of things that may

need improvement (ie. Strength and balance). We have heard many remarks from participants

that we are providing something positive, and that more people should see what we have to

offer. We strongly believe in what we are doing, and we want Calgarians to know that there are

options for helping your loved ones while also having your own day off from caregiving.”
