September 30th, 2021: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

news image
September 30, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, commemorating the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities. Confronting the reality of this tragic, painful, and shameful period in Canada and its ongoing impact is a vital element of truth, understanding, and reconciliation. Wherever you are on your journey to learn, understand, and act in service to Truth and Reconciliation, there are many resources available to assist. There are also resources focusing on Indigenous health and wellness helpful to those working or volunteering on healthy aging programs or initiatives. Here are just a few:
  • The Indigenous Learning Series is a suite of resources and events focusing on the history, heritage, cultures, rights, and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
  • The First Peoples Wellness Circle (FPWC) is a national not-for-profit corporation governed and managed by Indigenous Leaders and exists to improve the lives of Canada's First Peoples by addressing healing, wellness and other mental health challenges.
  • Reconciliation Canada actively provides programs and initiatives to inspire positive change in communities throughout Canada.
  • The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) is a national Indigenous organization established in 2005 by the Government of Canada to support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis public health renewal and health equity through knowledge translation and exchange. The NCCIH is hosted by the University of Northern BC in Prince George, BC.
