Elder Abuse in Ethnic Diverse Communities, Learning & Development Opportunity- May 15- 17, 2024

AEAAC is pleased to share with you our upcoming educational series Elder Abuse in Ethnic Diverse Communities - The Power of Collaboration.

 

Workshop Overview:

This one-hour workshop will focus on understanding the unique challenges faced by older adults experiencing abuse in ethnically diverse communities. Through a collaborative lens, this workshop will explore strategies for service providers, law enforcement, faith-based organizations and community members to address elder abuse collectively and engage directly with victims and their families with increased cultural competency, fostering a more supportive environment. Each workshop will provide time for Q&A period following the presentation.


Workshop Dates:

This FREE, one-hour workshop will be hosted virtually from 12 PM – 1 PM MST on the following days:

·       Wednesday, May 15

·       Thursday, May 16

·       Friday, May 17


*This is a FREE workshop which will be delivered virtually on corealberta.ca

We will offer three opportunities to attend this event in May. Sessions will be the same but held on May 15, 16 and 17.

Workshop Outcomes:

1. Increase Awareness: Raise awareness about the prevalence of abuse among ethnic older adults and the unique challenges they face in seeking help and support.

2. Enhance Understanding: Foster a deeper understanding of the cultural factors that may impact how abuse is perceived, reported and addressed within ethnically diverse communities.

3. Empower Professionals: Equip including police officers, victim services, bank representatives, lawyers, social workers, faith-based organizations and community partners, with the skills and resources needed to recognize, respond to and prevent elder abuse within ethnic communities.

4. Promote Collaboration: Encourage collaboration and coordination among community partners to develop culturally sensitive strategies and interventions for addressing elder abuse effectively.

5. Strengthen Support Networks: Identify opportunities to establish and/or strengthen support networks within ethnic communities to provide assistance and resources to victims of abuse.


About the Facilitator

Dr. Rose Joudi (Ph.D. in Psychology) brings over 15 years of expertise as an Aging and Ethnic Diversity Consultant. She is currently the Research Lead on an ethnocultural elder abuse awareness project with Carya (Calgary, AB). Rose contributes valuable insights to the field through her background in academia and research. Dr. Joudi collaborates with community members to address the unique needs of older adults in diverse populations. Committed to enhancing seniors' quality of life, she actively promotes educational strategies and facilitates training sessions including elder abuse awareness, ageism, trauma-informed care, cultural competence, and compassion when working with diverse populations. Dr. Joudi is also a board member of the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) and serves as an advisor for the Ministry of Seniors, Community and Social Services in Alberta, Canada.

The Alberta Elder Abuse Council (AEAAC) is a province-wide network of professional service providers and invested partners dedicated to increasing awareness and supporting a community response to elder abuse.

The AEAAC’s goal is to promote the well-being and security of older adults in Alberta. The Council works to develop and share resources to address and educate communities about elder abuse.
